In Haunted Attics: Bands You Should Know: Big Star #3

Per la terza puntata di quella che sta diventando una rubrica domenicale (ma non vi promettiamo che lo sarà), facciamo ancora di più un tuffo nel passato, per rendere omaggio ad una band che vi assicuro, dovreste conoscere.
I Big Star nascono nel lontano 1971 dall'unione di due grandi nomi della storia della musica: Alex Chilton (voce) e Chris Bell (chitarrista). Gli altri due membri del gruppo sono il bassista Andy Hummell e il batterista Jody Stephens. Nel 1972 esce il loro primo disco #1 Record, che dal punto di vista commerciale è un disastro. Bell lascia la band già prima del secondo disco, Radio City. La band si scioglie, vittima dell'insuccesso di pubblico e solo nel 1978 uscirà quello che secondo me è il capolavoro che ha consegnato alla storia Alex Chilton come uno dei più grandi songwriters, anche se forse tutti quelli che lo dicono oggi, non glielo hanno mai detto quando lui era ancora tra noi. Sto parlando di Third/ Sister Lovers.
Parallelamente, la storia di Chris Bell è ancora più triste, è morto nel 1978 in un incidente d'auto. Di Bell è uscito nel 1992 un album postumo (riedito in versione speciale nel 2009), I am the cosmos, che sicuramente vale la pena di ascoltare (e mi riprometto di farlo presto).
Alex Chilton ha continuato a fare dischi anche dopo i Big Star, senza diventare famoso, anzi. Quando è morto, nel 2010, non avevi di certo raggiunto la fama, anzi non aveva neppure un'assicurazione sanitaria.
A proposito della sua carriera, c'è un bellissimo articolo di Joe Tangari su Pitchfork, "The Life and Music of Alex Chilton", da cui riporto queste bellissime parole: "In his later years, Chilton settled in New Orleans. He'd been planning to play at SXSW this past weekend, and seemed comfortable with his elder-statesman status. He managed to finally achieve some of the success on his own terms that had so long eluded him-- the world sometimes takes a while to catch up to a great artist."
Resta vivo il ricordo della sua musica in tanti grandi artisti dei nostri tempi, che hanno speso parole importanti dopo la sua morte, parole che forse gli sarebbe piaciuto molto leggere, dato che tutta la sua esperienza coi Big Star era stata talmente fallimentare da un punto di vista commerciale da non fargli credere nemmeno più tanto nel valore della sua musica. Cito qualcuno che secondo me è riuscito ad esprimere bene cosa mancherà di lui, e cosa ci resta di prezioso.

Chris Chu (Morning Benders): "Alex Chilton is such a pop dude at heart, and I love that through all the shit you can still always hear that. Listening to Big Star 10 years later, I’ve realized it’s that special voice that keeps me coming back. Alex was an incredibly honest songwriter, someone that could always make himself heard through all the muck, through all the fucked up record labels and band breakups, and somehow, nearly 25 years after Big Star had broken up, his voice and songs found their way to me, and I am forever grateful."

Will Sheff (Okkervil River):"Alex Chilton’s feel, as a singer and songwriter, is there’s sublime beauty in what I’m singing but I really seriously don’t care about you. And I love that about him, that snotty asshole delivery, paired with this obvious sublime, deep sensitivity of his soul. You can hear that it’s there in everything he does. He’s got a beautiful voice, but there’s something so guarded about it, and on that record it’s ragged, bleeding, open. He was creatively at the ultimate peak of his powers but writing from a place of despair. Not that the album was despairing, but there’s a way in which when you completely give up caring at all, you kind of throw your vanity in the toilet, and you’re like “Fuck it man. All I care about is making this and I don’t care if anybody hears it and, in fact, fuck anybody who even wants to hear it. I give up. I officially give up.” And sometimes when you do that it’s a wonderful thing, because you’re not making work that’s vain. You’re not making work that’s self-consciously striving for something, you’re just trying to make yourself happy, and I think that’s what comes through in that record."

Allo scorso Primavera Sound Festival c'è stato un tributo all'album Third dei Big Star davvero memorabile, con l'intervento di grandi artisti del calibro di Jeff Tweedy, Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Sharon Van Etten, e tanti altri. E' stato un omaggio davvero toccante ad un album troppo bello per restare nascosto. Oggi c'è anche una band tributo davvero d'eccezione, i Big Star Third, ed è appena stato presentato un documentario che non vedo l'ora di vedere : Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.
Ma dopo tutto questo parlare c'è bisogno di ascoltare un pò di musica. Ho l'imbarazzo della scelta perché sono davvero tanti i pezzi bellissimi, ma mi darò un limite. Ne sceglierò solo quattro. E se dopo questi quattro pezzi non vi viene voglia almeno di ascoltare per intero Third, allora lasciate stare.
